geostrophic vorticity

The vorticity of the geostrophic wind. If pressure is taken as the vertical coordinate and the variability of the Coriolis parameter is neglected, the geostrophic relative vorticity ζ_g is given by

where g is the acceleration of gravity, f the Coriolis parameter, z the height of the constant- pressure surface, and ∇_p² is the isobaric Laplacian operator.
