intermediate frequency

1. (Abbreviated IF.) The beat frequency used in heterodyne reception resulting from the combination of the received radio-frequency signal and a locally generated signal.

The intermediate-frequency signal is usually the difference between the above signals and is employed to avoid the difficulty of the direct amplification of radio-frequency signals, which is technically more difficult to accomplish.
