Capture of particulates and gaseous pollutants by falling raindrops. In both cases, a “washout coefficient” (W_p) can be estimated that expresses the fractional depletion (X/X₀) of the pollutant during a washout period t:

where X₀ is the initial pollutant concentration and X is the concentration at time t later.
