The complete cloud and precipitation structure associated with an area of rainfall sufficiently elongated that it has a clear directional orientation of its banded precipitation distribution. In tropical cyclones, rainbands are curved bands of clouds and precipitation that spiral inward cyclonically toward the storm’s center. Rainbands often have distinct regions of convective and stratiform precipitation that are organized by larger mesoscale or synoptic-scale influences.
